LAST DAY

Italy and Mediterranean Cruise

Well it is the last day and the last email. Tomorrow we begin our long journey home.

We got up this morning on a mission to get to Vatican City for our tour of the museum and the Sistine Chapel. It was a hard start to the day because Ellen is smothered with a head cold. Poor thing. We pushed her all day but today was her day to collapse when she got home.

We took the bus to Vatican City and it was chaos because of the Pope thingie. People everywhere. Lots of nuns and priests too. We finally found our way to the museum in time for our tour. Our tour guide was yet another English speaking Italian with a very strong accent. You have to listen so hard to understand, it hurts the brain! There is only so much history one can digest.

We also managed to get into St. Peter's Basilica 20 minutes before it closed to prepare for that Pope thing. This was thanks to our guide who helped us skip the lines. Certainly lots of beautiful art and sculpture but I am sure it would mean more if you were Catholic.

After this, our feet were gone, Ellen was on the verge of collapse so we went for lunch and a rest and the best cafe latte ever!!! From there we walked to the Bridge of Angels which was the final thing on my list.

We decided to head back to the hotel for Ellen to nap. We did take a small detour for a final gelato. Isaac and I went to an internet cafe for a bit and then home to pack.

We had reservations for dinner and were really looking forward to this restaurant as it is booked up days in advance. That proved to be a bust. An expensive bust and Isaac was disappointed not to get his long sought after cannoli. Oh well...not like he was deprived of sweets.

Isaac's final thoughts of the day were his 5 best things about the trip:

1. Just being in Italy
2. Gondola ride
3. Pompeii, the Coloseum and the beautiful churches...all that history stuff
4. Food on the cruise
5. Being in Turkey

Not bad at 12 years old.

Signing off til next trip.......Shelley and Isaac

PS. Isaac says when he travels without me he won't be sending emails because they are too hard to write. Lol!
